Brett Favre reportedly informed the Vikings he will not return to Minnesota for a second season, according to multiple reports. Favre has sent text messages to teammates saying, "This is it," league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Neither Favre nor the Vikings has confirmed the news, but a statement is expected later Tuesday, the sources said. Vikings coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that he has talked to Favre in the past 24 hours, but was unaware of the reports of Favre's apparent decision to retire. "I'm not a big hearsay person," Childress said. "I've got to hear it from the horse's mouth." Childress told the NFL Network that the Vikings would be prepared if Favre didn't return. "The same plays are being installed whether Favre was here or the guys that are here are here," Childress said.

The Associated Press, citing an unnamed source, reported that the 40-year-old Favre called Childress to say his injured ankle is not responding as well to surgery and rehabilitation as he had hoped. Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs said Tuesday that he wasn't convinced that Favre was actually retiring. "I won't believe it until I see Tarvaris Jackson starting against us," Briggs said.

Packers linebacker Nick Barnett said he didn't know whether to believe the latest news. "It's like believing in Santa Claus. You get gifts, but you ain't seen Santa Claus," he said. "We'll see what happens ... If he does retire, congratulations. It's a well-deserved retirement. But if he does come back, we'll be gunning for him the same way."

With Favre, of course, nothing is ever necessarily final after 19 NFL seasons. He told the Vikings last year he wouldn't play, but changed his mind and joined them immediately after they broke training camp, with Childress even driving to the airport to pick him up. Camp this year ends on August 12.

Favre has been considering retiring every summer since 2006. It led to an ugly parting with the Packers that got him traded from Green Bay to the Jets in 2008. After a so-so season in New York, he announced his retirement in early 2009 for the second time, then reconsidered and signed with the Vikings. He had one of his best seasons last year, with career bests in completion percentage (68.4), quarterback rating (107.2) and fewest interceptions (7), while throwing for 33 TDs and 4,202 yards to lead the Vikings to an NFC North title.

He hurt his left ankle in the NFC Championship Game loss to the New Orleans Saints and had arthroscopic surgery in May. Favre was under contract for $13 million this season, but only if he plays. If Favre doesn't return, the Vikings' starting quarterback job likely will be decided in a training camp battle between Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. The 32-year-old Rosenfels, acquired by the Vikings last year in a trade with the Houston Texans, has a career rating of 81.2. In 32 games, he has 30 touchdowns and 29 interceptions and has passed for 4,156 yards.

The Vikings also drafted quarterback Joe Webb in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft. Nearly everyone had assumed Favre would return and he did nothing to discourage that. He threw passes for a second straight summer with high school students in Hattiesburg, Miss., joked about playing until he's 50 and said playing another year wouldn't worsen his already-damaged ankle. Childress shrugged off all the questions and admitted he didn't know whether Favre would really come back.

The Vikings didn't pursue a trade for Donovan McNabb and declined to select a quarterback of the future in the draft. Still, Favre took a beating in the loss to the Saints and said afterward that he would not take long to make a decision on returning for the second year of his contract. As the months ticked by, Favre posted a statement on his website reminding everyone that his ankle problems didn't mean his career was over.

If Favre decides to actually retire for good, it will end one of the most storied careers in NFL history. A three-time league MVP (1995-97), Favre won Super Bowl XXXI with the Packers. His 11 Pro Bowl appearances are the most ever by a quarterback. Indeed, Favre holds most major NFL records for a quarterback, including career touchdowns (497), yards passing (69,329); wins (181); and seasons with at least 3,000 yards passing (18). Of course, he also has thrown the most interceptions (317) and been sacked 503 times -- a long, long history of wear and tear. Many of Favre's sacks came on scrambles, and so did the picks as he fearlessly tried to force the ball -- underhanded, left-handed, whatever worked -- where few, if any, could put it. He brought a sense of danger to the game and Vikings fans responded in droves.

He was a classic gunslinger and has never minded the label. "I would hope 20, 30 years from now, I'm remembered for something else besides records," Favre told The Associated Press in 2007, when the annual summer waffling was still sort of new. "Whether I have them or don't have them. If that's the only way I'm remembered, apparently I didn't do something right or leave a good enough impression on the fans. ... "I know when I leave the game, I'm going to miss it. I know that. I'm not going to sit here and say, when I leave, it's over and I felt like I've done everything there is to do. "I feel like I've given every ounce of energy I can give every single time I stepped on the field."

When it comes to imbibing fine whiskey, a handful of questions need answering. On the rocks? Scotch or Irish? A wee drop of water? The connoisseur knows it almost always comes down to personal taste. Then there's the issue of whether to keep your prized whiskey in the original bottle or decant it, in other words, pouring it into a crystal carafe and tossing that bottle into the recycling bin. Scottish distillery Macallan hopes at least one serious whiskey drinker wants to decant in style.

At the end of November in New York, it will seek bids for a 64-year old Macallan—the Scottish distillery's oldest release—sealed in a specially designed decanter from French crystalware firm Lalique. The decanter was created using the traditional and now-rare technique of cire perdue, meaning "lost wax," and is shaped with a flat bottom, like the decanters used on board ships in the 1820s. Its design features depictions of the Macallan estate in northeast Scotland. The decanter and its contents are being auctioned at Sotheby's after a world tour with stops in cities including Los Angeles, Seoul, Osaka, Taipei, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Along the way, Macallan is auctioning off miniature taster bottles of the 64-year-old Scotch, and has already raised between $6,000 and $9,000 in Paris, London and Moscow. All of the funds generated by the auctions—including the sale of the Lalique decanter—will be donated to "charity: water," a non-profit group that aims to bring safe drinking water to developing nations.

"It would be great to sell it for a world record and then give all the money away to charity,"

 said Ken Grier, director of malts with the Edrington Group, which owns Macallan. But the question remains for the rest of us: to decant or not to decant? Mr. Grier spoke by telephone with Duncan Mavin.

The following interview has been edited:

WSJ: Decant or not decant?

Mr. Grier: Whiskey matures as long as it is in a wooden cask. Fifty percent of the flavor comes from the barrel the whiskey is aged in and the rest comes from the way you make it. We would tend to put it in a bottle and then leave it in there.

WSJ: Will keeping scotch in a decanter impact the taste?

Mr. Grier: Its quality will not really deteriorate. It's pretty stable because of the higher alcohol content. Remember, Scotch whisky has a minimum of 40% alcohol by volume, whereas wine is typically more like 12% to 13%. The higher alcohol content keeps the scotch stable even once you've opened the bottle.

WSJ: How do you serve scotch at home?

Mr. Grier: When I serve whiskey, I pour it from the bottle. But that's just personal preference.

WSJ: What should I look for when I choose a decanter?

Mr. Grier: Look for a great-quality manufacturer who is using high-quality materials. Shape doesn't really matter. We're going with the ship decanter, which is designed for long journeys at sea, for this Lalique tie-up. It's got a stable bottom so that it won't tip over and smash and you won't lose the precious drink. But the shape you choose really just comes down to your own aesthetic taste.

WSJ: How much interest in scotch are you seeing in Asia?

Mr. Grier: Fifty-two percent of Macallan sales are in Asia. It's a very important region for us. People really get the authenticity of the brand here.

Staked to a five-shot lead at the turn, Rose finished with seven straight pars and closed with an even-par 70 to finish at 10-under 270 and hold on for a one-shot victory Sunday in the AT&T National, his second PGA Tour title in his last three events.

It would have been three straight wins for the 29-year-old Englishman except for his collapse last week at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut when he blew a three-shot lead in the final round

He had three-putt bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, and suddenly his lead was down to two. Then came a furious charge from Ryan Moore, who one-putted his last eight greens for a 65 to close within one shot. Rose was steady down the stretch, however, and calmly rolled in a 30-inch par putt on the last hole for the victory.

Tiger Woods wasn't close. The defending champion shot a one-over 71, marking the first time in 11 years that he didn't break par over four rounds in a regular PGA Tour event. He wound up 14 shots behind Rose, the most Woods has finished out of the lead since the 2006 Players Championship.

The consolation prize for Moore, who finished second, was a berth in the British Open.

Germany are through to the semi-finals after producing another masterful performance to beat Argentina 4-0 at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium. Diego Maradona’s Albiceleste came into this match with high hopes of avenging their quarter-final defeat in 2006 but they ultimately had no answer to a slick, powerful German side who will now face either Spain or Paraguay in the last four.

Games as eagerly-anticipated as this one often disappoint, but this particular encounter took just three minutes to catch fire as Joachim Low's side snatched an early advantage. Bastian Schweinsteiger provided the assist with a superbly judged inswinging free-kick, and with Sergio Romero caught in no man’s land, Thomas Muller applied the slightest of headed touches to flick the ball into the net. It was Germany’s 200th FIFA World Cup™ goal, their fastest in 32 years and the quickest so far at South Africa 2010. The only downside for Low’s side was that it left Argentina with 87 minutes to respond.

However, it was the Germans who continued to carve out the better chances, with Miroslav Klose - winning his 100th cap – firing wastefully over from the edge of the box after some outstanding, unselfish set-up play from Muller. Argentina attempted to grab a foothold, with Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain creating decent shooting positions, but on each occasion Manuel Neuer proved equal to their goal-bound efforts.

Nevertheless, as the match wore on, La Albiceleste relied increasingly on speculative long-range efforts, with the subdued Lionel Messi firing over just before the break and Di Maria missing the left-hand post by a matter of inches with a ferociously-struck 25-yard drive. Germany also remained a constant threat on the break, and Podolski – who had earlier come close to scoring himself – was to lead the counter-attack that provided Low’s team with their all-important second goal.

With the second half reaching its midway point, the Cologne forward broke clear on the left and, from a position where he would have been forgiven for shooting, he instead squared intelligently for Klose to tap home from inside the six yard box. The goal left Argentina with little option but to throw men forward, and with Diego Maradona’s side over-committed, Germany proceeded to pick them off on the break.

Within six minutes of Klose making it two, Arne Friedrich removed any lingering doubts over the outcome with another close-range finish, profiting on this occasion from a dazzling solo run from the excellent Schweinsteiger. There was even time for Klose to rub salt into Argentinian wounds, side-footing home Mesut Ozil's measured cross with a minute remaining to round off a memorable German win.

With this spectacular win, Germany took a giant step toward winning the championship.

Fresh from his side's 3-1 win over Mexico in the Round of 16, Argentina coach Diego Maradona said he will pick the right players to beat Germany in Saturday's FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final. A double from Argentina's Carlos Tevez, plus Gonzalo Higuain's fourth of the tournament, sealed the win while Mexico scored a consolation goal by Javier Hernandez.

Maradona is confident his side will now beat Germany, who crushed England 4-1. "We will take stock of our situation, then we will try and put together the best team to showcase our talents against Germany," he said.

"It will be the team to give us the guarantee to overcome Germany. We know Germany are a different team to the side we faced in Mexico. They are stronger, but we will field the right players to beat them."

Despite struggling to qualify for South Africa, Maradona's side have now picked up their fourth straight FIFA World Cup win and the former midfield maestro said he would dearly love to face the Germans himself.

"I feel like pulling on the jersey and playing myself, it is beautiful to be involved with this group of players, I feel proud to share these moments with them," he said. "They said I had no idea about how to coach, but suddenly I am winning matches and I am still the same guy."

Bob Bradley did not get a good night's rest. The coach of the U.S. national team and his players did not get back to their rural base until the wee hours of Sunday morning, but it wasn't the roosters or the dogs or even the cows that kept Bradley awake.

Instead, unable to drop off to sleep, he played and replayed the 2-1 loss to Ghana that knocked the U.S. out of the World Cup.

"I never sleep well after games,"

 he admitted. "Wins, losses, it's never easy after a game. I usually watch the game over and over a few times."

But Bradley was not second-guessing himself.

"When decisions are made and things go well, I never pat myself on the back," he said. "When decisions on a given day don't go as well, that's part of what we do, that's how the game works."

What went right at South Africa 2010 for the U.S. was that it finished on top of its first-round group, ahead of England, Slovenia and Algeria. The U.S. also proved to be a resilient side, able to overcome adversity and claw its way back into games.

A couple of errors led to the round-of-16 loss to Ghana, which scored on its first shot in the game and on its first shot in overtime, but there were two factors, above all, that characterized the Americans in South Africa.

The first was the inability of the forwards to score goals. The U.S. netted five in total, all of them by midfielders, including three by Landon Donovan.

Forwards Jozy Altidore, Robbie Findley, Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez did not find the back of the net.

The second identifying characteristic of the team was its habit of yielding early goals. In two of its four games, the U.S. was scored upon within five minutes of the start and in another it was scored upon within 15 minutes. In a rather startling statistic, over the course of four games, the U.S. held a lead for a total of barely three minutes.

On Sunday, Bradley talked about both issues.

"Goals decide matches,"

"and I think anyone who follows the game around the world knows that that's still the greatest challenge in the game -- to be someone who can consistently score goals. So it's an area where we do need to improve."

As for the early defensive miscues, Bradley said it was a matter of experience and maturity in knowing how to manage a game.

"The second part is that that's just how the game works sometimes,"

"I can watch the game at the highest level and see the same things happen, whether it's Barcelona or Manchester United or Brazil or Spain. That's the way the game works."

Whether Bradley still will be the U.S. coach for the next four-year cycle leading to the Brazil 2014 World Cup is up in the air, but his chances appear favorable.

"I've always enjoyed new challenges,"

"But I also from day one have considered it a tremendous honor to coach the national team. "Over time, there will be discussions. At this point it's too soon after the final whistle."

In the most dramatic moment in U.S. Men’s National Team history, forward Landon Donovan scored a 91st minute goal to give the United States a 1-0 victory against Algeria to earn first place in Group C and a berth into the Round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In the most dramatic moment in U.S. Men’s National Team history, forward Landon Donovan scored a 91st minute goal to give the United States a 1-0 victory against Algeria to earn first place in Group C and a berth into the Round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. will now play Ghana at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday, June 26 at 2:30 p.m. ET live on ABC HD and Univision.

With the other Group C match seeing England defeat Slovenia 1-0, the Americans needed a winning goal or they would have been eliminated from the World Cup.

It was Donovan, the USA's all-time leading scorer, who provided the dramatic goal with a clinical finish from seven yards out after a brilliant attack that pierced the Algerian team from goal line to goal line. After Tim Howard snared a looping header on his goal line, he immediately surged forward and hit a streaking Donovan in the midfield with a perfect throw. Donovan then blazed forward at a blistering pace and found Jozy Altidore with a pass into the penalty area.

Altidore, who played a fantastic match despite getting pounded repeatedly by Algerian defenders, had enough left in the tank to dribble into the penalty area at speed and slip a square pass to Clint Dempsey. With Algerian goalkeeper Raïs M'Bohli lunging for the low cross, Dempsey got a touch that ricocheted off the goalkeeper and rolled to the center of the penalty area where Donovan stroked it home, setting off a wild celebration as almost the entire U.S. team dog-piled near the left corner flag and the stadium erupted with patriotic fervor.

“It’s a match where both teams need to win, so it turns into a very wide open game,"

 said U.S. MNT head coach Bob Bradley.

"Algeria is a very good team, skillful and well-organized, but the game now takes on a different tone just because of the need for both teams to win. "In this last cycle, guys have grown, taken leadership roles, as a team we’ve grown stronger, we’ve had experiences where we’ve been hardened...We believe that in soccer sometimes you can’t always control a call or a bounce, but you can control what you’re all about as a team, what you put into it, how committed you are to giving everything in the game. I think that has become the special quality of this group.”

After the match, former President Bill Clinton, who is the honorary chairman of the U.S. Bid Committee for the 2018/2022 World Cup, came to the locker room to personally congratulate the team on the historic victory.

Donovan's goal, the 44th of his international career, gave the USA a World Cup group title for the first time in 80 years (since the very first World Cup in 1930). It was also the fourth World Cup goal of his illustrious career, tying him with Bert Patenaude on the USA's all-time list. The match was also Donovan's 11th all-time World Cup appearance, tying him for the U.S. record with Cobi Jones and Earnie Stewart. Donovan has started 11 consecutive World Cup games for the United States dating back to 2002. He also becomes the only U.S. player to score multiple goals in two different World Cups.

Throughout the evening at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, the USA were the better team and the aggressor for 90 minutes and into stoppage time. Donovan's late heroics might not have been needed, however, but for another controversially disallowed goal by the United States.

This time it was Dempsey scoring from close range in the 20th minute on what appeared to be a valid goal that was nullified for offside. On the play, forward Herculez Gomez calmly crossed the ball to him at the top of the six-yard box after collecting his own rebound from a close range shot that was saved by M'Bohli. Gomez's attempt was the result of a steal by Altidore in the midfield as he managed to nick the ball away from the Algerian defense, then square a pass to midfielder Michael Bradley, who had the ball tackled away at the top penalty area, only to have it roll for Gomez to hit on goal.

The rest of the first half (and the game) was more of the same, with the U.S. compiling near-miss after near-miss in front of a partisan crowd cheering their every move.

In the 35th minute, Altidore, Donovan and Dempsey almost combined for the first goal, this time with Altidore hitting Donovan on a cross-field pass that Donovan then slotted to Dempsey in a clever opening in the center of the penalty area. A sliding Algerian disrupted his shot and Dempsey was unable get a good strike on the ball as it was saved by M'Bohli.

Two minutes later the USA created an even better chance, this time with Bradley finding Donovan open deep into the right side of the penalty area. Donovan lifted the ball over the sliding Algerian 'keeper, but it deflected into the air and dropped to Altidore. Donovan was also lurking for the rebound, but Altidore got to it first and blasted his effort over the bar from close range.

Throughout the first half, Algeria attempted a number of long range shots, the best of which came off the foot of Rafik Djebbour in the 6th minute that crashed off the crossbar after defender Jay DeMerit could not clear a long pass that landed at the top of the penalty area and skipped through. In the 38th minute, Karim Matmour hit a blast from 25 yards out that Howard pushed out for a corner, taking no chances with the accurate, hard shot.

Overall, the USA defense was stout throughout the game, and recorded their first shutout in World Cup play since the team's historic 2-0 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea Republic (a span of seven games). The shutout was also just the second for the United States in 22 World Cup matches dating back to 1950.

Jonathan Bornstein made his World Cup debut in a revamped U.S. backline, slotting in at left back, while Carlos Bocanegra lined up centrally alongside DeMerit. In addition to Bornstein, Edson Buddle made his first-ever World Cup appearance as a late second half sub and DaMarcus Beasley made his seventh all-time World Cup appearance in his third World Cup tournament when he replaced Bornstein in the 80th minute. For Gomez, the start was just the second of his USA career, dating all the way back to a game at the 2007 Copa America.

In the second half, the U.S. had as many as five great scoring chances, before finally breaking through in the 91st minute. Included in those chances was a shot by Dempsey that hit the right post after he was sprung with a long cross from Altidore. Dempsey then had a chance to sweep his rebound into the net as it bounced behind M'Bohli, but he could not turn the attempt on net.

In the 65th minute, second-half substitute Benny Feilhaber snuck into the right side of the penalty area, took the ball tight along the end line and tried to guide a cross in front of the goal behind the diving M'Bohli, but the Algerian goalkeeper knocked the ball out for a corner with his legs.

Buddle had a headed attempt on goal in the 68th minute on a cross from Steve Cherundolo, but was not able get squeeze it past M'Bohli, and just two minutes later a cross from Altidore from the right wing was almost knocked into his own goal by Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra.

The last definitive U.S. threat before the goal came in the 79th minute on a free kick from Michael Bradley that he drove straight on goal for M'Bohli to punch away.

After the U.S. goal, the emotions of the Algerians got the best of them as Anthar Yahia was sent off after receiving two consecutive yellow cards for arguing with referee Frank De Bleeckere of Belgium following a foul call on the North Africans in the waning minutes.

U.S. forward Robbie Findley missed the match for the United States after picking up yellow card cautions in the team's first two games, but the entire U.S. line-up will be available for selection when the team takes the field in the Round of 16 against Ghana, which will be re-match of the USA's final group match at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, a game in which the U.S. was eliminated from the tournament after a 2-1 loss.

The NBA Finals are here. The series matches two perennial powerhouse franchises in the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, which have 32 NBA Championships between them.

The series is a rematch of the 2007-2008 Finals, in which the Celtics swept the Lakers in four games. That series was dominated by Boston’s “Big Three” (Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett) stars. However this series could be different because of the Lakers addition of Ron Artest, who has picked up his game in the playoffs this year including a buzzer beater in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. He was brought in by the Lakers to upgrade their defense, which was a problem in their last Finals appearance and to compliment the Lakers’ three stars Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom.

The Celtics coach Doc Rivers has always preached defense on his teams and will have his team ready to play. He will undoubtedly rely on his young point guard Rajon Rondo to set the tone for Boston.

Rondo started in the last Finals matchup between these two teams, but since then he has elevated his game this season to join Peirce, Allen and Garnett as major contributors for the Celtics.

The matchup between these teams could hinge on the performance of Rondo and Artest for their respective teams. We will see just how important these players will be as the series begins Thursday in Los Angeles at 9p.m. ET on ABC.

The debate over Kentucky bourbon versus Tennessee whiskey has raged for as long as the two have been around.

Pop culture is no help. George Thorogood needed “one bourbon, one scotch and one beer,” while George Jones found a love “as smooth as Tennessee whiskey.” Visitors to distilleries in both states all want to know the same thing:

What’s the difference?

“It’s a big difference,” said Lynne Tolley, master whiskey taster and great-grandniece of Jack Daniel, the largest-selling whiskey in the world. “And so many consumers and the general public do not know.” Ultimately, it all comes down to charcoal.

For much of its life, Tennessee whiskey is very similar to Kentucky bourbon. Both are made from a blend of corn — at least 51 percent to qualify as bourbon, though Jack Daniel’s uses 80 percent — plus rye and barley malt. The grains are cooked with limestone-filtered water, fermented, strained and distilled (then generally distilled again, to further remove impurities), until what remains is a high-octane alcohol ready for aging. “Essentially, this is a moonshine,” said John Lunn, master distiller for whiskey maker George A. Dickel & Co. “A really, really good moonshine.”

Bourbon makers like to say

that “all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon.” At this point in the distillery process, turning the brew into Tennessee bourbon would be easier — and cheaper — than turning it into Tennessee whiskey. But instead of moving the distilled alcohol directly into charred, white oak barrels the way their bourbon-making cousins do, Tennessee whiskey makers go a step further. The booze is strained through finely chopped sugar maple charcoal (made at the distilleries) and blankets of white virgin wool. Known as the “charcoal-mellowing process,” the additional step removes additional impurities and refines the flavor of the drink. “It takes days for a drop of Jack Daniel’s to get all the way to the bottom,” Tolley said. “And then it goes into the barrel.” The barrels are then moved out to the storage warehouses for aging — the process is very similar in both bourbon and Tennessee whiskey manufacturing — which adds color and flavor.

It is worth noting

that the charcoal-mellowing process removes many more impurities left behind during fermentation, particles called congeners. While they contribute to the taste, congeners are often accused of contributing to hangovers. Lunn wouldn’t promise that overindulging in George Dickel won’t result in a hangover, however, only that wines and beers are more likely to spark one. And if you can’t get past the fact that Tolley’s title of “master whiskey taster” sounds like one of the best jobs in the world, there’s something you should know: “They won’t let us swallow,” she said. Instead, the 20 tasters who test the pre-aged mix and the 25 who taste the matured brew all spit their Jack Daniel’s out after a good swish in the mouth. That’s not to say that working for Jack Daniel’s doesn’t come with perks. On the first Friday of each month, employees each get a free bottle.

Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on rye bread. There are a couple of legends or stories involving the creation of the Reuben Sandwich. I can find no actual evidence to support either claim. You be the judge!

1914 - It is said that late one evening an actress came into the restaurant and said, Reuben took a loaf of rye bread created this Reuben sandwich. Arnold Reuben, Jr., the son of the restaurant’s founder, believes that the sandwich was first made in 1927 or 1928 by one of the chefs who though that he ate too many hamburgers, made him a “really good sandwich.”

Patricia B. Taylor, daughter of Arnold Reuben (1883-1970), the founder of Reuben’s Restaurant and Delicatessen, remembers that her father made the first Reuben Sandwich in 1914. She described the incident to Crag Claiborne of the New York Times in his book called Craig Claibornes - The New York Times Food Encyclopedia:

The year was 1914. Late one evening a leading lady of actor Charlie Chaplin came into the restaurant and said, 'Reuben, make me a sandwich, make it a combination, I'm so hungry I could eat a brick.' He took a loaf of rye bread, cut two slices on the bias and stacked one piece with sliced Virginia ham, roast turkey, and imported Swiss cheese, topped off with coleslaw and lots of Reuben's special Russian dressing and the second slice of bread. He served it to the lady who said, 'Gee, Reuben, this is the best sandwich I ever ate, you ought to call it an Annette Seelos Special.' To which he replied, 'Like hell I will, I'll call it a Reuben's Special.'

In 1938, Arnold Reuben gave an interview for the American Life Histories:

Manuscripts from the Federal Writers’ Project, 1936-1940, Reuben and his Restaurant, December 18,1938. Excerpts from the interview are as follows:

I’ll tell you about how I got the sandwich idea. I owned a delicatessen on Broadway and one day a dame walks in, one of the theatrical dames, and she’s down and out I suppose, and she asks me for something to eat. Her name was Anna Selos. Well, I’m feeling sort of good, so I figure I’ll clown around for the dame. That’s how it all came about. I’m clowning for the dame. Well, what do I do? I take a holy bread that I used to keep and grab up the knife and, you know, clowning like, I cut it right through on the bias. Then I take some roast beef, I don’t remember exactly what. But, anyway, I figure I’ll put anything on. So I take some meat and cheese and I slap it on, and I put on some spice and stuff and I make her up a sandwich; it was a foot high. Well the dame just eats it, that’s all. She must have been plenty hungry. And when she gets through she says, “Mr. Reuben, that’s the best sandwich I ever tasted in my life.” Well, the idea comes to me in a flash. I’ll call it the Anna Selos sandwich, after the dame. Then, one night, she brings some friends up, you know, stage people and a newspaper man, and this guy he goes right behind the counter and makes himself up a sandwich, and then he tells me why I don’t call the sandwich after celebrities? Like what happened with Anna Selos. Why don’t I call it the Anna Selos sandwich? Well, boys, in a flash, I get the idea. Anna Selos! I’ll call it a Reuben Special.

1925 - Another version is Reuben Kulakofsky (1873-1960), a wholesale grocer in Omaha, Nebraska and co-owner of Central Market in Omaha from 1900 to 1943, created the Reuben Sandwich. Kulakofsky belonged to a weekly poker group whose members apparently enjoyed fixing their own sandwiches every bit as much as they enjoyed playing poker. One of the players, Charles Schimmel, owner of the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha, put the Reuben Sandwich on the hotel menu.

1950s - George Leonard Herter, is his book Bull Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices, Volume II, gives his account on who invented the Reuben Sandwich. Herter's writings were known for their mixture of legend and history. NOTE: I have never been able to verify the below information in my research. You be the judge:

The Reuben Sandwich is unquestionably one of New York's greatest contributions to the world of eating and is found in restaurants in all of the major cities of North America. The sandwich was invented by William Hamerly, a New York accountant and bachelor cook. He named it for Arnold Reuben, founder of Reuben's New York Restaurant. Arnold Reuben has done a great deal of work for New York charities. He, in fact, received several awards for his charitable work. Hamberly named the sandwich for Reuben, not because he founded the famous Reuben Restaurant, but because he admired his charitable works. Like any really outstanding cooking recipe, the Reuben Sandwich spread over all of North America and even into Europe in a very short time.

1956 - Fern Snider, chef of the Rose Bowl Restaurant in Omaha, was named grand prize winner in the 1956 national sandwich idea contest sponsored by the National Restaurant Association. The Reuben Sandwich obtained almost immediate national fame. According to the September 1956, American Restaurant Magazine, in an article titled "National Sandwich Winners:"

THE REUBEN, a hearty man-sized sandwich of corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese on Russian rye bread, is the nation’s top hotel and restaurant sandwich in the opinion of judges of the National Sandwich Idea Contest in which more than 600 different sandwich items are entered from all parts of the country and Hawaii. To truly appreciate a fine whiskey, you need to know how to properly drink it. Single malt whiskey, unlike other kinds of alcohol, may be best enjoyed without mixing it with soda. To truly appreciate a fine whiskey, you need only add a few teaspoons of water to unlock the aroma and to be able to taste the layers of the drink. Whiskey should be sipped slowly, allowing the drinker to enjoy the different flavors. Follow the steps below to maximize your experience.

Drinking Whiskey Tips

• Learn about the different types of whiskey; not all are alike.
• Pour about 1.5 oz of whiskey into a tumbler; a glass that curves at the top will offer optimal aroma
• Take small sips and allow the whiskey time to warm in your mouth before you swallow.

• Pour the whiskey in a tumbler, wine, or sherry glass.
• You're not going to be taking shots, so you'll want a wide glass you can sip from.
• If the glass curves in at the top, it will help trap in some of the drink's aromas.
• Pour about an ounce and a half.
• You can drink as much or as little as you want, but this is a good amount to start with.
• Tilt the glass and watch the whiskey run down the side.
• You can also try swirling the glass.
• Note the thickness of the drink. A thicker whiskey has a different texture and is higher in alcohol content.
• Hold it up to the light.
• Look for any inconsistencies, or particles floating in the whiskey. These are signs of lower quality.
• Just add water.
• Adding clean water to a whiskey can unlock all of its potential flavors and aromas.
• It is essential to use clean bottled spring water, as the chlorine in tap water will flavor the drink.
• Add anywhere from a splash of water up to an equal amount of water and whiskey.
• Take a good whiff.
• Put your nose as close to the whiskey as you can, but try not to get so close that the aroma burns your nose.
• Take a few good, deep breaths and inhale the aromas (breathe out through your mouth and not back into the glass). This is called "nosing."
• Take a note of every type of aroma you can identify.
• Take a sip.
• Let it cascade down your tongue.
• Swish it around a bit so it touches every bit of your mouth and you can pick out all of the flavors it has to offer.
• Let it warm up a bit in your mouth.
• Swallow.
• Feel the warmth of this liquid joy as it goes down your throat.
• Repeat the process again until your glass is empty.

I want to bring your attention to one of the most anticipated games in the NHL playoffs this year: the Red Wings against the Sharks. Some say this game will be decisive. Let me explain why.

In the sports betting world, what happened in the game five Western Conference semifinal match-up between the Detroit Red Wings and the San Jose Sharks is what is sometimes referred to as a hiccup. One of the time tested hockey betting rules for the past decade has been to not count the Detroit Red Wings out of a series. Game four showed that the Red Wings are still able to go down with a fight. Game five will show that the fight they put up was just a hiccup in this series.

It seems like the Red Wings did everything right in game four. They chased starting goalie Evgeni Nabokov, they scored seven goals and they won the game. At the other end of the ice Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard was brilliant stopping 28 of 29 shots. But it was obvious that the four goals Nabokov gave up in the first period completely deflated the Sharks, and there was little chance they were going to recover.

Game five will be a different story. Anyone familiar with NHL playoff betting will know better than to ask if Evgeni Nabokov will start in goal for the Sharks. Nabokov is a professional that has probably already put game four out of his head. He will be back in goal for game five, and he will offer the same caliber of play he has been putting out all playoff long.

There is a good chance that game five of this Western Conference semifinal match-up will be your last chance to bet on Red Wings Sharks playoff games for this season. As good as Jimmy Howard looked in the Detroit net in game four, he is still a rookie. He faced elimination and he stood up to the test. But he was helped by an extremely poor showing from Nabokov in the other net. The story in game five will be much different.

The Red Wings have been able to put sustained pressure on Nabokov for this entire series, but game four was the first time Nabokov could not respond. The one thing the Red Wings do have going for them in game five is that they will more than likely be able to continue their offensive barrage. The Sharks will not be pulling back into a defensive cocoon for game five, they will be attacking. That will leave Nabokov on his own most of the night.

There were 26 penalties called in game four with two fighting majors and two 10 minute misconducts. When the game turned on the Sharks, the Sharks got frustrated and this may be something the Red Wings will look to exploit in game five. The Sharks can be very aggressive at times, and the Red Wings are experienced enough to use that aggression as a way to take the Sharks’ focus off the game. If the Sharks allow game five to fall into chaos, then they may have to play a game six regardless of whether or not Nabokov gets his form back.

At this point it seems that the Hawks have many strengths on their side as a sport enthusiast blog puts it. They say that for most of the year, their success came because the pair of Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook performed very strongly so far. Some even says that they may be the league’s best. However, other say that they show some signs of a potential burnout as they have not been as good later in the season as they were earlier. Also Cam Barker returned to Minnesota and his replacement, Kim Johnson, is day-to-day with what is likely a concussion. Puck mover and power-play specialist Brian Campbell is also out with a broken clavicle and rib after he took a vicious hit from Alexander Ovechkin in March.

However, the Hawks’ blueline still remains solid, especially since Keith and Seabrook will play 30 minutes a game. Jonathan Toews should be a force in the playoffs. Given his size, hands and outstanding faceoff ability, it’s no wonder he plays his best in big games. Patrick Kane is the team’s top scorer and extremely tough to handle given his speed and stickhandling ability. Then there’s Marian Hossa, who is looking to reach a third consecutive Cup final.

So how will the well-coached Nashville Predators keep pace you may ask. First of all, they will rely on their excellent defense corps. Shea Weber is the envy of most NHL teams thanks to his very strong hits.

Nashville needs him to dominate as he did for Canada in the Olympics. Dan Hamhuis and Ryan Suter are also excellent minutes eaters who can participate in the offense when needed.

It is important for Nashville to keep its offense up and score some points to have a chance against the Hawks who is the favorite according to many sport betting sites and independent analysts.

However, enthusiasm and great teamwork and an excelllent audience can help a team to overcome its difficulties and cause a big surprise.

Renovations improve one of Franklin's first family restaurants.

A neighborhood family sports grill, exactly what owner Jeff Mohr hoped to create when he, with the help of investors, founded Bleachers Sports Grill in September 1989.

118 Maples Shopping Center on Murfreesboro Road has been its home ever since.

Mohr got the idea for Bleachers after he and some friends from a YMCA rec league basketball team couldn't find anywhere to watch sports. Having been in the restaurant business since 1964, Mohr decided to start Bleachers on a shoestring budget.

“We just really took a flyer on it,"

he admits.

From the outset, Mohr has stressed the importance of having a product that appealed to families, and it appears to have worked.

“One family wanted their daughter to have her last meal at Bleachers before she went off to college,"

Mohr tells me.                                  

Whatever the food choice, you can bet it wouldn’t take four forks to eat it. The Bleachers’ menu contains simple everyday foods.

"When people come to Bleachers they want a comfortable atmosphere and food they're comfortable with,"

Mohr exclaims.

Apart from the food, patrons can also feel comfortable at the bar. The bar itself is enclosed in ropes like a boxing ring. The ring is only one of the many pieces of sports memorabilia that remind you you're in a sports-themed restaurant. The bar houses six television sets.

Dan Hobbs, a 13- year patron of Bleachers, felt comfortable right away.

"I was looking for somewhere to watch the Kentucky Derby and I knew a sports bar would have it,"

Hobbs explains.

"I instantly made friends, therefore it felt comfortable... I didn't know anybody."

Although he says it isn't a sports bar, the owner would have to agree that it’s easy to make friends at Bleachers.

"If you make friends today you will make money tomorrow because if they know somebody they’ll feel comfortable and come back,”

Mohr says.

Even so, the No Smoking law, along with higher gas prices and the current recession have really hurt business in recent years. Group functions have been hit especially hard, according to Mohr.

“I’m trying to get a coach to bring his team in here to remind them we’re a family restaurant,”

Mohr exclaims.                      

And he has a strategy on how to get that done. He’s installed new carpet; new high top table and chairs next to the bar, new flat- panel TVs above the bar, and a fresh coat of paint to the whole establishment.                            

That’s not all.

Bleachers has optimized its web presence and has broken into the world of social media thanks to Mytus,a company that specializes in increasing Web presence and Web advertising for companies. Visitors to the new Bleachers Web site will see a blog, a TV schedule, as well as the daily special.

"Through this it will be easy to track return on investment ...the goal is to convert visitors into customers,”

proclaims Joe Agee, area sales director.

The family restaurant now has a new look, but same family approach.
